In this era of impersonal technological prowess, and life lived at a hectic pace, I relish the hands-on sensation of working in traditional artistic mediums. I love bright and vibrant color, with a composition full of movement and flowing lines. As a self-taught artist, I approach art making as a lifestyle. I enjoy the variety of working in both large and small format, ranging from illustration, to public murals and studio work. The materials I use vary depending on the size and eventual placement of the piece. Although I tend to use acrylics most often, I enjoy exploring new art forms and methods, new means for expressing the narrative threads that inspire me. While my art travels via public and private collections across the U.S., I remain in S.E. Seattle, where I live with my husband and two Dobermans. www.cathyfields.com

Everything is connected. I see, feel and photograph the energy connecting everything. My images are imbued with the spiritual qualities of light. I seek out, capture and transform luminous concentrations of color, form and tone into lustrous prints of joy made visible. Energy in nature surrounds and embraces us. It may manifest as the thrill of lightning or as the mystery of inner illumination inspired by art. Fisher has been extensively exhibiting his work since 1975 in the Northwest and has produced many exhibits on Orcas Island, since 1982. He owns the Peter C. Fisher Gallery in Eastsound on Orcas Island. www.petercfisher.com

In my artwork I explore the tenuous boundary between living nature and human encroachment. The sculptures and gouache paintings of my Water Shed series present a humorously ironic taxonomy of post-consumer creatures of the sea. While gyres of garbage swirl in the Pacific, plastic becomes the new sand. Currently living and working in Port Townsend WA, Hackenberg received her BFA degree from Rhode Island School of Design, and has developed a prominent career in nature-based painting. Exhibiting extensively, Hackenberg has received many awards and is included in public and private collections, most recently in the New York State Museum. www.karenhackenberg.com

Estimated Value: $150
Minimum Bid: $75

FRANCIE HANSEN: "We are a throwaway society; we discard things and relationships very easily. I enjoy and see true value in all of the everyday stuff we walk on by without seeing and acknowledging. My eyes are often looking down on the ground at a flattened eyeglass stem, a shoe, a damaged cell phone or a plastic toy. "Please pick me up," these cast-offs call out to me. So I do, and with humor and integrity, I put them together with other treasures in some artistic way, in order to give joy and pleasure to those who see my creations. So-Cal born, college in the 60s, lucky enough to travel the world and apprentice with artists and ethnomusicologists.

John HericSculpture Study (for picture brides) by John Heric

San Juan Island, WA
Title: Sculpture Study (for picture brides)
Year: 2008
Medium: Ink and Paint
Dimensions: 8.5"x11"
Estimated Value: $250
Minimum Bid: $125

Over the years, my work has never stopped changing, growing. I constantly challenge my technical skills, as well as my use of imagery. Critical thinking is my contact sport. When the work gets too easy, too comfortable, I move on to something new. There is a story there, my story about something. A point of departure to ponder the history and implications of the image. Sometimes it can be figured out, but mostly the story remains strangely elusive, challenging the viewer and never giving up the whole answer.**

**All of us at IMA wish to express our deepest sympathy at hearing the news of John Heric's recent passing. Our thoughts are with his family at this time. He will be greatly missed.

From about the age of 12 I planned to be an astronomer. The unchanging ceaseless beauty of the heavens was a fabled lure to my imagination. The impossible wonders lurking just beyond the edge of vision embodied my ideas of beauty. I pursued that ambition through a first year at Caltech before I lowered my sights to terrestrial wonders. I have been a commercial photographer since 1973 when I began my career doing production stills for feature films in Rome, including "Fellini's Casanova". Housel's work has been seen in many magazines from Architectural Digest to Sunset. He has traveled and photographed extensively for organizations such as CARE. His work has been shown in Seattle and is in public and private collections.www.houselphoto.com

RaVae Luckhart San Juan Channel by RaVae Luckhart

San Juan Island, WA
Title: San Juan Channel
Year: 2005
Medium: Stone Lithograph
Dimensions: 15" x 20"
Estimated Value: $350
Minimum Bid: $100

Sound is a contributing element, consciously or subconsciously integrated into my work. Jazz, rock, classical, Gregorian chant and even radio war coverage with missiles and explosions in the background influence what appears on the canvas or paper. My response to the energy of sound is gestural, cathartic and involves "feeling into things," not "knowing my way". When a complete communion occurs, art happens. It is the reason to paint. Luckhart, a native South Dakotan and retired University Art Professor, has received numerous awards in her career, including a Fulbright Teaching Award. Her work has been exhibited extensively in the US and has had many murals commissioned. She is building a studio/home on San Juan Island and maintains her Rapid City studio, L'Atelier du Papier.

Year: 2002
Medium: Bronze
Dimensions: 14" x 12" x 3"
Estimated Value: $1,800
Minimum Bid: $900

It is unlikely a sculpture will change any minds alone. It may not directly influence political, social or cultural changes. However, the work can have a transformative effect on the viewer. This is what sculpture has always been doing within its province. The constant challenge is working with an ancient material to create fresh and new contemporary symbols. Luckman has received numerous awards, been purchased for collections, accepted for exhibitions and selected for commissions across the country and internationally, including Washington, New York and Finland. He holds a MFA from the University of Minnesota and was a Professor of Art at Bethel University in St. Paul, for 28 years. He lives and works on San Juan Island. www.gravelhead.com

Childhood experiences of living among trees remain vivid: climbing up, hiding in, sheltered under, jumping out of, grabbing fruit from, reading in, crying beneath, or gazing up into as evening bats came and went. I never lost a sense of enchantment with the trees that populate my life. Trees speak. Listen. I produce work that explores a deep sense of place, and investigates visual perception and painting as a way of "thinking with the whole body." Pamela's art has been exhibited in Seattle, New York, Sacramento, Eugene and Canada. Her work is in public collections in Washington State and Washington DC. For the most part, my work is directed by an underlying awareness of the visual attributes of objects in space and the observable effects of time upon them. The aspects of time I witness are infinitely varied, such as movement captured in the migratory flight of birds, the visual manifestations of its passage as seen in weathered wood, or a glimpse into the uncertainty of the future revealed in an arrival and departure milieu. Born and raised in Montana, Richard now lives in Anacortes, Washington. His work has been exhibited in Anacortes and Friday Harbor, WA., as well as being included in publication for the Skagit Land Trust.

Dorene Steggell Poplars At Barn by Dorene Steggell

Eugene, OR
Title: Poplars at Barn
Year: 2008
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Dimensions: 16"x 10"
Estimated Value: $350
Minimum Bid: $150

Dorene Steggell's art reflects the places that she has lived – a farm at the base of the Wasatch Mountains, the arid West's red rock, plateaus, canyons and lush mountains, the south of Spain, the maritime Northwest, and the richly agricultural Willamette Valley. In her teens she studied art in New Mexico and Utah. As a textile artist, she taught and sold her work before returning to college to study environmental design and earn a graduate degree in architecture. She now works full-time as an artist and printmaker from her studio in Eugene, Oregon. Dorene currently works primarily in oil painting and monotype. She finds that the two media feed and balance each other. Monotype provides a vehicle for spontaneous exploration and painting provides the opportunity for deeper development and evolution of a work. She has been in several juried shows. In February 2010 she received an award in the Yosemite Renaissance XXV. She has served as a juror on several Oregon State 1% for Art selection juries. www.dorenesteggell.com

Ann Walbert Bailer Hill Barn by Ann Walbert

San Juan Island, WA
Title: Bailer Hill Barn
Year: 2010
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Dimensions: 8"x10" plus frame
Estimated Value: $600
Minimum Bid: $250

When I was an art student in a Midwest college in the 1950's, I was hit with the force of the post Impressionists and the works of the Abstract Expressionists. My love of drawing and the need to explore with paint and brush began then and remains with me today. Sometimes a sketch, music or even a thought will be the trigger for action---stretch the canvas, set the palette with oils and let the brush go to work. I'm still excited when the elements come together to stop the eye and start the imagination. Ann graduated as an art major from Millikin University and also attended the Art Institute of Chicago. She taught drawing, painting and sculpture and was a trustee of the Monterey Museum of Art. Her work has been in many exhibitions and resides in public and private collections around the US. Walbert is now an enthusiastic member of the art community in the beautiful San Juan Islands. www.annwalbert.com

Many of her works, therefore, are studies in line, texture, color and form, highlighting single aspects of scenes from woods, fields, or tide pools.
