The "Outside
the Box – Inside the Museum" Small Sculpture Exhibition opens September 25 at the Museum on 28 First Street in Friday Harbor with an Artists Reception, just prior to the ARTSTOCK Weekend. The Exhibition continues through December 30, 2009. Submissions must have been received on or before August 18.
As a continuing visual arts service to professional artists and sculptors living in the San Juans, the San Juan Islands Museum of Art and Sculpture Park (IMA) is sponsoring this juried small sculpture Invitational for sculptors who live in the San Juans.
Dr. Martin Segger, selected to be the juror for this IMA Small Sculpture Invitational, is a much sought-after reviewer, juror, lecturer and advocate for the arts. As the Director of the University of Victoria Art Collections at the University of Victoria, Victoria, B.C., Dr. Segger holds a B.A. degree from the University of Victoria and a M.A from the Warburg Institute at the University of London.
In 1982 Dr. Segger was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He began his museum career in 1974, first as an art curator, then by developing a training program for the B.C. Museums as part of a wider museums development initiative by the Province of British Columbia. Since 1979 he has been Director of the Maltwood Art Museum & Gallery, University of Victoria.
A total of 15 to 20 sculptures will be selected for exhibition by Dr. Segger. The Exhibition will be reviewed and applicants will be notified on or shortly after September 2. Further details regarding the Exhibition, the Opening, and installation dates will be given to those selected. Artists selected will be invited for an artist reception with James Hubbell on Saturday, September 5 at the Sculpture Park.
