IMA Sculpture Park
From the Park's beginning in 2001 when Roche Harbor Resort loaned the land in perpetuity to the Westcott Bay Institute, now the Islands Museum of Art and Sculpture Park, for the purpose of establishing a sculpture park, the artists and sculptors and early founders believed that the Park would become a destination and would draw people to the Island and the resort. They were right — Today the park gets more than 75,000 visitors annually.
Visitors today enjoy the trails throughout the reserve and the benches sited along the pathways, which provide a place for rest and contemplation as one peruses the sculptures and the Park's pond and inland ocean views on Westcott Bay.
Sculptures (currently, more than 100 sited and juried pieces) include works in bronze, stone, wood, metal, glass and ceramic by noted artists from the Pacific Northwest and beyond; and include modern, representational and conceptual works, with art gates, bells and benches scattered throughout the site. Mapped and timed plotted paths are found within the open spaces, the quiet woods, and along the 'Studio Theatre' by Westcott Bay. A Park Pond bird sanctuary has Tuck Langland's 'Dancer on a Bench,' located at the Pond's apex. The power of the sculptural object is now linked to the hunger for the imagination in the Sculpture Park experience.
