About the Event

Members' Exclusive Preview & Artists' Reception: Summer 2023 Exhibits

June 7th, 5-6 PM, Open to the Public 6-7 PM

An intimate gathering to kick off the unveiling of three enthralling exhibitions, each a testament to the transformative power of art. This unique experience welcomes our museum members and specially invited guests to explore a world beyond the everyday, and meet the artists themselves. Be among the first to traverse the landscapes and ideas created by our artists, igniting conversations and stirring emotions.

Luminous Coast: Kurt Solmssen’s Painterly Vision

Enter the serene world of Kurt Solmssen, an artist deeply connected to the Pacific Northwest. His soulful understanding of the region’s mystical light and the interplay of shadows is brought to life through his atmospheric canvases. His compositions of home and family, coastal scenes, and forest backdrops, balance vibrant waterfront hues with the neutral tones of the surrounding woods, achieving an almost abstract effect. Solmssen’s work sensitively captures the essence and beauty of a life lived by the bay.

Unusual Phenomena: Kalina Winska’s Imaginary Climatescapes

Experience a captivating fusion of art and science in Kalina Winska’s 3D installation, 'Unusual Phenomena.' This immersive artwork weaves together Winska’s personal observations with data-driven weather patterns, offering a unique perspective on the global impacts of climate change. Walk beneath cloud forms imprinted with meteorological data, and navigate ropes and buoys depicting storm scenes. Winska’s accompanying 2D work uses a palette of bold forms and intricate symbols to visualize atmospheric topography and climate modeling.

The Art and Politics of Eating: A Community Collaboratory with Zev Robinson

Delve into the rich, intertwined narratives of art, food, and film through the creative lens of Zev Robinson. His project, "The Art and Politics of Eating", uses various mediums - from film screenings to farm-to-table dinners - to encourage dialogue around agriculture, environmental impacts of food production, and nutrition. Robinson’s work is set against the backdrop of the San Juan Islands, with vibrant, food-themed paintings on display at SJIMA.

Don't miss this exclusive opportunity to meet the artists and preview their compelling works before they debut to the public.

No tickets or RSVP's are required.
