ARTIST STATEMENT
I was first inspired to work with wood in the early 1980’s watching Roy Underhill’s The Woodwright’s Shop program on PBS. My earthy tendencies as a gardener and early homesteading projects instructed the utilitarian uses for wood. that early work eventually grew into artistic design with natural wood.
My design ideas, along with what the wood wants to be, has me co-designing with nature. I continue to pursue that balance between design and static form, creating functional art with character.
My medium is not just wood, but species and pieces that are not customarily regarded as furniture worthy. My first criteria for selection is form and dimension. Because I make minimal alterations to the wood, aside from what’s necessary to create a fluid joint, the piece I select has to be just right. Getting all the parts to play well together comes about through careful selection and meticulous joinery.
My work has been shown in art markets and Fairs, but commissions have been a mainstay as well. “Hunter’s Repose” was shown in the juried arts fair in Anacortes and the tete a tete was featured in Mountain Living magazine.
