ARTIST STATEMENT

I first came to Lopez Island in 1972. Where I found a place to paint on the south end of Lopez. At that time, I was working on large abstract paintings for a Seattle one-man show. I continued showing up and down the Northwest coast but also worked with other major artists like William Morris and Margret Tomkins.

I completed a degree in Broad Area Art Education, studying at The Evergreen State College and finishing at Central Washington University. This gave me the choice to teach at levels K-14 in the public school systems. I started teaching in 1984 and had a very successful teaching career for 32 years. In that time, I have received some major awards:

Washington State Art Teacher of the Year 2015

Advisor of the Year for Washington State, 2009, for Washington Technology Student Association (TSA)

Teacher of the Year, 1992, for Washington State in Technology presented by IBM and Technology and Learning Magazine

National Award for Teaching / Advisor of the Year, 1989, presented by NASA and National Science Teachers Association for Intergraded Curriculum 1989 at the Senior High School Division

National Award for Teaching / Advisor of the Year, 1989, presented by NASA and National Science Teachers Association for Intergraded Curriculum at the Junior High School Division

1986 National Computer Graphics Contest Adviser Award, Second Place Winner placed into the International Computer Graphics Museum in Florida

Who's Who in Education, 2001, 2004, 2010

Through my past experiences I have learned a large number of art medias and enjoy creating art in many mediums: computer graphics, animations, graphic design, photography, drawing, painting, ceramics, glass blowing, stone carving, print making and many more.

My wife Rocky, who is also an artist, and I have created an art studio on the south end of Lopez Island called R&R Studios. Here we create our art, exploring with the delightful pleasures of creating.
