ANCIENT GIANTS PROJECT

It's fascinating that every folk tale tradition from around the world features giants of great antiquity. The giants are also mentioned in the religious texts. Often, the humans have to fight them and often humans win, remember David and Goliath. In any case, these giants were people also. They looked like us. However, they have been super strong and really, really big, some legends say 10, 30, or even 100 feet tall. There were, of course, advantages and disadvantages to being so huge. They were strong and literally could lift mountains up and build megalithic cities. They could retain energy and warmth better and be less vulnerable to weather conditions. The disadvantages clearly were connected to the amount of food such giants needed. The folk tales say one giant could eat 10 bulls, and it's a lot of beef stew! Perhaps, when the giants walked upon the Earth, forest trees had been broken and couldn't grow fast enough to provide timber for all the construction projects.  And when the giants became upset, their wrath easily would have been equal to plate tectonics. The ground shifted beneath the feet of some guilty party.

Yet, reportedly, as the Brothers' Grimm tale titled “Stromberg Mountain” reports, there was a lot of brainpower, too. Many giants were kind and well educated. The Stromberg Mountain giant had books and maps in his house and provided necessary directions to the hapless humans in the absence of the GPS.

With all this in mind, you have a gigantic undertaking. Think about all of this, either true or fiction, it's a very stimulating line of thought.

MATERIALS provided by SJIMA; tempera and/or acrylic paint, paintbrushes, 22 by 28 poster board, inspirational images, templates, and reference pictures from around the world.

MATERIALS found in one's household: pencils, markers, an additional piece of the poster board(optional), glue if using it.
