About the Event

Join us on Saturday, May 9 for this free Family Art Days class!

In this hands-on class, families will explore one of art's most fundamental ideas: that what's missing is just as important as what's there. Working with positive and negative space, kids and their grown-ups will paint mirrored compositions — one side light, one side dark — where the shapes on each side are defined by the spaces left unpainted on the other. The result is a single artwork that tells two stories at once.

Instructor John Nippolt — San Juan Island artist, painter, wood carver, and longtime art educator — brings a lifetime of teaching experience to this deceptively simple but visually striking technique. It's a class that teaches kids to see differently, and to discover that empty space is never really empty.
