Alison Stigora: Constellation
Step into the Sterner Atrium Gallery for an evening devoted to Constellation, the new site-specific installation by Seattle-based artist Alison Stigora, and an opportunity to see the work first-hand with the artist herself.
Commissioned by SJIMA for the museum's two-story glass atrium, Constellation brings together more than one hundred suspended sculptures made from driftwood and reclaimed shattered glass. Weathered branches and roots become luminous as they catch and scatter the changing natural light, joined by an original soundscape drawn from field recordings made on San Juan Island. Together they create a shimmering environment that shifts throughout the day.
"At its heart, Constellation is about the possibility for transformation," says Stigora. "I'm interested in what happens when something familiar, weathered, or broken is seen in a new light—when materials associated with decay or destruction become places of beauty and wonder."
