THE MAKING OF THE WARBASS SCULPTURE

December 20 – January 21, 2018

ATRIUM

Gareth Curtiss

Northwest artist Gareth Curtiss shared in the creation of the Ed Warbass sculpture he made for Friday Harbor. The public was invited to watch and interact with Curtiss in a temporary workspace in SJIMA’s glass atrium.

Curtiss demonstrated the clay sculpting process that precedes mold-making and bronze casting. The final life-size statue depicts town founder Captain Edward D. Warbass sitting on a park bench with his dog, Bob, by his side. The final sculpture was installed on First Street in 2019.

Ed Warbass is one of three men credited with founding Friday Harbor and making it the seat of San Juan County.
