Brava Nepantla (Jaguar)

Like the Jaguar itself, “Brava Nepantla” is a piece about Latinx bravery, courage and fiery. The word Nepantla means “in-between” in the indigenous language of Nahuatl, a Uto-Aztecan language still spoken in Mexico. The in-betweenness of cultures, borders, and the theoretical framework of late scholar Gloria E. Anzaldua is what inspired the text in the earrings and hence the title of the piece.
The paisleys, which are in-lieu of the Jaguar’s spots, represent the Chicanx/e culture of the U.S./Mexican borderland of El Paso, Texas, both artists’ hometown. The significance of the bandana relates to a “chola” dress code, a Mexican American urban subculture. By combining these symbols and text, I aim to bridge the cultures of the past and present to create a modern look of what it means to be a Latinx woman of color living on the border of American and Mexican culture.
Como el Jaguar sí mismo, “Brava Nepantla” es una pieza sobre la valentía, el coraje y el fuego de los latinos. La palabra Nepantla significa “intermedio” en la lengua indígena náhuatl, una lengua uto-azteca que todavía se habla en México. La intermediación de culturas, fronteras y el marco teórico de la desaparecida erudita Gloria E. Anzaldua es lo que inspiró el texto de los aretes y, por lo tanto, el título de la pieza.
El cachemir, que sustituyen a las manchas de Jaguar, representa la cultura chicanx/e de la zona fronteriza entre Estados Unidos y México en El Paso, Texas, la ciudad natal de ambos artistas. El significado del pañuelo se relaciona con un código de vestir “chola,” una subcultura urbana mexicano-estadounidense. Al combinar estos símbolos y texto, mi objetivo es unir las culturas del pasado y el presente para crear una apariencia moderna de lo que significa ser una mujer latina de color que vive en la frontera de la cultura estadounidense y mexicana.
