Hometown Boy Makes Good!

Longley’s films, Iraq in Fragments and Sari’s Mother were both nominated for Academy Awards for Best Documentary Features. Longley has been awarded, among others, three jury awards in 2006 at the Sundance Film Festival and he has been a producer, director, cinematographer and composer for 18 years. In 2009, he was awarded the prestigious MacArthur “Genius Grant.”

The Longley film Angels Are Made of Light was honored at the Friday Harbor Film Festival. Islanders get to celebrate a “hometown boy” as Longley graduated from Friday Harbor High School.

Bilge Ebiri of the New York Times commented, “Longley has a knack for composition and for capturing telling details… The director finds beauty everywhere — in a cloud of dust, a traffic jam, the raucous din of children at play. And wherever such beauty exists, we imagine, hope can never be entirely absent.”
