SJIMA’s 2021 SUMMER FAMILY ART DAYS

SJIMA is pleased to announce the return of outdoor classes with our summer Family Art Days (FAD) Program! Free, creative fun projects for children with their family members to make at home or in a peaceful, orchard setting with an FAD art instructor on hand to help.

Family Art Days offer the community free, imaginative projects for children with their family members. They can create at home or in the peaceful, natural setting of the orchard. The popularity of and demand for this program has grown by leaps and bounds during the pandemic.

Inspired by African Twilight, SJIMA’s summer exhibition June 10 – September 13, The FADs are on Saturdays beginning June 12-September 11. (No classes or packs on July 3 and August 21.)



OUTDOOR AT THE MUSEUM

  • 11- 2 in-person classes outdoors in the orchard next to the museum

  • Due to pandemic rules, space in the orchard is limited so we recommend that you reserve your place prior to Saturday morning at www.sjima–online.org/family-art-days

  • 1-3 art pack pick -up in front of the museum

For the Summer program, families need to pre-register for each week's take-home pack, so enough supplies are available.

FAMILY ART DAYS SUMMER 2021 SCHEDULE

June 12 - Folk Paper Beads.

A simple & original take on jewelry. Inspired by Africa Adorned book.


June 19 - African Rock Art.

Images of prehistory come alive with the help of glue & tempera!


June 26 - Anansi of the West African tribes, The Trickster. A playful spider puppet of paper and bamboo.

July 10 - Aida Triarama. A tetrahedron-shaped stage set.

Bring your personal opera to life. Poster board & foils.


July 17 - The Towers of Timbuktu.

3-D shapes take you to the ancient city. Stickers, paper & more.


July 24 - The Queen of Sheba Ethiopian paintings.

Try your hand in an acrylic painting of Biblical scale.

July 31 - Zimbabwe Birds.

Still mysterious and regal, these eagle-like birds are made of clay.


August 7 - Tuareg Cross. Exploration of shape & meaning.

You'll create a unique jewelry from silver foil.

August 14 - The Crystal World in the Congo.

A science fiction novel by Ballard comes to life as a gem- encrusted crocodile!


August 28 - Bill Traylor a folk-art genius.

Enigmatic to the core he offers inspiration for the smashing crayon drawings!


September 4 - Kuba Textiles & Universal symbols.

From Equatorial Africa come constructions in paper collage.

September 11 - Nubian pyramids of the Sudan-a best kept secret.

3- D architectural constructions of the poster board.
